FIRE RISK ASSESSMENTS

Understand your premises.
Know your priorities.

A structured assessment of fire risks and precautions, with findings explained clearly and actions prioritised.

Relevant to your building.
Useful to your team.

We start by discussing the building, its use, the people who occupy it and any particular concerns. This establishes whether the assignment is within our competence and capacity and what the assessment needs to cover.

We then review the accessible premises, relevant records and management arrangements within the agreed scope, explaining the evidence, limitations and further investigations where needed.

LEGAL DUTIES: ENGLAND & WALES

An assessment is required.
Action makes it effective.

For premises within the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person must arrange a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment, keep it under review and record it. Fire safety arrangements must also be recorded and appropriate emergency procedures established.

A written fire emergency plan should reflect the assessment and explain what people need to do. The level of detail should suit the premises and those who use them.

SSRM can support this work. Appointing a consultant does not transfer the responsible person’s duties.

ASSESSMENT APPROACH

Methodology and competence
serve different purposes.

PAS 79-1:2020

Our assessment approach follows the structured methodology of PAS 79-1:2020 for premises other than housing, adapted to the premises and agreed scope.

BS 8674:2025

BS 8674:2025 provides a framework for individual assessor competence. Ask about the qualifications, experience, continuing development and scope relevant to your assignment.

Clear limitations

Specialist surveys, intrusive investigations, system testing and design verification are not automatically included. Additional work is identified and agreed separately.

These are codes of practice, not legislation. Reference to them does not imply BSI certification or an independently verified BS 8674 competence level.
